Hrc Poker

I was playing far cry 4 at 1024:780 resolution unstretched. I used hrc v2.1 to play the game in stretched mode and now my resolution is locked at 1980:1024 stretched.I tried the change the resolution back to 1024:780 but I could not change it even after deleting every files of hrc. My resolution is also locked for any games I install on my device. This version includes major upgrades of the program framework and unfortunately some of these changes can not be rolled out via the existing auto-update functionality. You can download the new installer from the download section.

New MTT ICM mode

The user interface and the calculation model for multi table ICM calculations have been completely re-written. The new model provides equity estimates that are essentially as good as a full 'Malmuth-Harville' ICM calculation, even for fields with thousands of remaining players. Detailed information about the accuracy of the new model, including a comparison to the old MTT model, can be found here: High Accuracy ICM Calculations for Large Fields.

Usage

To setup MTT calculations with the new model:

  • Select 'MTT ICM' as equity model on the first page of the setup dialog, choose bounty options as usual.
  • Enter the prize structure on the right side of that page. Repeated prizes can be skipped, entering the prize jumps is sufficient. (e.g.: entering 10th = 10$, 15th = 5$ will assume that 10th-14th all pay 10$)
  • Click Next and use the top button on the MTT dialog page to generate stacks on other tables, input total chips and number of players as needed. (If a chip total is entered on the first page, then HRC will estimate the number of remaining players based on the active stacks.)
  • Check the summary table for the generated stacks to make sure everything is correct. Done.

Note regarding PKO bounties: By default, HRC assumes that the average bounty in the tournament is equal to the average bounty on the active table. The average bounty on the other tables can be manually specified on the MTT dialog page.

Monte Carlo mode

The Monte Carlo mode adds a second calculation engine to HRC, besides the classic Math / Enumeration mode. It is especially useful for spots where more than 3 players might be actively involved in the pot. It also supports card bunching, which is mainly significant for strategies of the later positions when folded to on a full table. The Monte Carlo engine quickly produces accurate results for the main lines, even in large calculation setups. On the downside, EVs for lines that are played out infrequently will converge very slowly.

Usage

There is a new entry in the Home tab to start a Monte Carlo Hand setup. The setup itself is mostly identical to a regular 'Basic Hand Setup', the only difference is an additional setting on the first dialog page where the maximum number of active players can be specified (default is 3). Interaction with the calculated hand is also largely unchanged. The main difference is that the Monte Carlo mode does not automatically update EVs when ranges are manually changed.

The Run Nash Calculation feature (green button in the toolbar) can be used to run additional sampling, e.g. to update EVs after changing ranges. The Reset option clears all previously sampled EVs, this is useful if big changes were made to the strategies. Updates can be done either to the entire hand (default), or only to a selected part of the game tree. The latter option is much faster (up to around 20x) and is useful to speed up sampling when looking at infrequently played lines.

Key differences

  • The Math engine displays EVs based on full run-outs over all boards and all opponent hands. The displayed EVs are perfectly reproducible if the defined strategies are the same. The Monte Carlo mode estimates EVs by sampling random hands, the displayed EVs include randomness from sampling, i.e. a sampling error. This is especially significant for infrequently played lines where sample sizes may be very small.
  • The Math engine always displays up-to-date EVs against the specified strategies, upon changing a range the EVs of other ranges are automatically updated. (Note that the other ranges are not automatically updated, only their EVs.) The Monte Carlo mode does not update EVs unless additional sampling is done.
  • To allow efficient calculation, the Math engine restricts the calculated game: No more than 3 active players are allowed, and passive card removal is not considered (i.e. card removal from folded ranges). The Monte Carlo mode supports up to 10 active players and considers all card removal effects.
  • The Math engine displays the Nash distance (Exploit%) in the Outline area. This measures the distance of the current (unlocked) ranges to a Nash Equilibrium, in a true Nash Equilibrium all Exploit% values are zero. Nash distance calculations are not available in Monte Carlo mode.

Limitations and known issues

  • When using FGS with the Monte Carlo mode, any lines with >3 players in the pot are calculated using regular ICM.

  • Advanced Hands using the Monte Carlo mode still only support a maximum of two consecutive limps or flat calls. This is a limitation of the betting setup UI and not a principal restriction in the Monte Carlo engine.

  • Both the Math / Monte Carlo engines consider all possible outcomes of a pot, dealing correctly with potential ties and side pots. Allowing more than three active players drastically increases the number of possible outcomes, which also means that the equity model needs to be invoked more often. Typically this isn't noticeable, but when using Monte Carlo with a high setting for max. active players in combination with the MTT ICM equity mode with large player fields this can lead to slow initialization times.

Upgrade Instructions

The new version uses a different format to store custom prize structures. If you wish to import your custom structures from the previous stable version then follow the instructions below:

  1. Locate the net.holdemresources.calculator.prefs file from your old HRC installation and copy it to an easy-to-find location. This file can be found in the following location within the installation directory:

    HRC / workspace / .metadata / .plugins / org.eclipse.core.runtime / .settings

  2. Install the new HRC version and go to Tools: Manage Structures.

  3. Use the import option from the toolbar and select the .prefs file you saved in step 1.

  4. The prize structures will now be available in a new Imported category.

  5. Optionally create new categories from the toolbar and drag / drop structures to re-organize them.

  6. Finally save the changes. Your imported structures will now show up in the custom structures menu.

Discontinued features

  • The Game Tree tab has been deactivated due to issues with the graph library used. The feature appeared to see little use in practice, but depending on user feedback it may be added back at a later time.
  • SQL import from HM1 and PT3 are permanently removed, these options have been obsolete for some time.

Legacy version for 32-bit systems

Starting with this version HRC will no longer support 32-bit systems. Downloads of a legacy HRC version with 32-bit support will remain online in the download section until the end of 2020. We will release occasional updates to maintain hand history support, but the legacy version will not receive any feature updates going forward and it will eventually be discontinued entirely.

  • It’s in the nature of poker tournaments that at some point, you will find yourself playing with the short stack. Fewer players remain and closer to the final table you are; more players, including you, will be maneuvering with shorter stacks because blinds are getting bigger, and the tournament has to end eventually.

    In this written work, you will find answers about short stack meaning and tips on how to approach situations and make profitable moves even when stacks aren’t big enough to play a lot of post-flop poker and outsmart your opponents.     What is a short stack?

    When speaking in terms of general poker, being short stacked means that you have a relatively small quantity of chips compared to others. Even someone with 50BBs when other players have 200BBs or more can be considered a short stack.

    In tournament poker tho, you are short-stacked when your stack size falls below 25BB, even if you are among players with bigger stacks.

    Let’s see why it happens so often in tournament poker.

    Example of how a blind increase can drastically shorten stacks:

    We are playing nine-handed at a final table. The big blind is 10.000, small blind in 5.000, and the ante is 1000.

    There a total of 2.700.000chips in play and tournament average is 300.000 chips, which translates in an average of 30 big blinds per player. At this moment, there are four players with a short stack.

    Now, if you are playing in a tournament with a normal or slow structure, the difference between levels will be small. So blinds can increase from 10.000/5.000 to 12.000/6.000.

    At this point, the average is still 300.000 chips per player, but it’s not 30 big blinds anymore. Because of the blind level increase, the average expressed in big blinds is 25BB. Even a small rise in blinds caused that there is one more player with a short stack at the table, and three more are getting close to the danger zone.

    If you are playing in a turbo or a hyper-turbo tournament, blind increases will be even more significant.

    A normal blind increase in turbo or a hyper-turbo tournament would be from 10000/5000 to 20000/10000.

    If you look at the first table, you will notice that there are only four players with stack size lower than 25 big blinds. After the blind level went up, there is, all of a sudden, only one player left with 25 big blind stack or more. Even players that had deep, healthy stacks a minute ago, are now in short stack zone.

    How to play short stack poker

    When talking about “short stack play,” it’s not only about considering playing while we are the “shorties,but also when we are chip leading the final table and are playing against players with short stacks. It’s an effective stack that matters.

    Advice is divided into two sections for easier understanding, preflop, and post-flop plays.

    How to play your short stack preflop:

    As you probably already know, poker is a game of adjustments. We adjust our game depending on our opponents. We adapt our ranges based on the position we are given. And we need to adjust our preflop ranges and strategy when the effective stack is short. Here are basic adjustments when stacks become short (as mentioned at the beginning, when stacks are 25BB or less)

  • We should be shoving more when an effective stack size is less than 15BB. One of the biggest mistakes is pushing too tight, especially from late positions.
  • Contradictory to that, one of the more significant mistakes is that many players are pushing too wide with stack sizes bigger than 15BB. Generally, tournaments are soft, and you shouldn’t be taking marginal spots too often.
  • If you are playing against a good opponent, you should be calling all-ins very loose blind versus blind. A lot of beginners are folding too much in their attempts to survive as long as possible and ladder up, so good players will take advantage of that and shove insanely wide – basically with any two cards. If you are playing blind versus blind against newbie tho, who is way too tight and has shown no aggression of any kind, you should call tighter.

  • If you are the one in the small blind, you should be aware of who is sitting in the big blind. If the player is good, you can expect him to call your shoves wider that a beginner or someone very tight. So again, you have to adjust. Against a good player, you should be shoving much tighter than against a weak player.
    When playing versus former type, you need to recognize that and start pushing any two cards. Opponents will be folding way too much, and you’ll be making tons of money, as most of the time, recreational players have no idea which hands they should be calling with their short stack.
    In the scenario where the big blind is playing scared and is super tight, folding even a hand like 54 is wasting money.
  • We should open-raise tighter from late positions, because chances of someone re-shoving is bigger, especially if the player on the BTN or small blind has a reshoving stack.
  • We can implement mixed strategy from the cut-off, button and small blind position, and start limping, especially when players left to act are prone to 3-betting or re-jamming. With limping, we invest fewer chips, so we can automatically play more hands.
  • As you can see, a lot of our decisions come from stack size analysis, so the key is to be focused and observant.

    Things to consider when facing the opportunity for shoving:

    • Position: obviously, you should go all-in with a wider range of hands from later positions.
    • Stacksize: shorter you are, the looser you should be going all-in. You are jamming wider with a stack size of 8BB, then you are with 15BB.
    • Early-stage of the tournament: Let’s say you lost a big pot in one of the first hand of the tournament and you are now sitting with 12BBs left. Everybody else is still deep with stacks over 100BB. In this case, you should be shoving tight. You are not seriously endangering anyone, there is no damage to their stack if they lose a hand, and you will get called lightly.
    • Late-stage of the tournament: Now, we are at the final table with 12BB. The situation is completely different than in the scenario above for early stages. At the final table, you will cover some of the players even with your 12BB stack and have the ability to seriously cripple almost everyone else, so you can push looser, especially from later positions and collect a lot of chips.

    A lot of your decisions should be player dependant, so you need to be focused and aware of who you are playing against. It’s a very different story if you are shoving your remaining 10BBs against a calling station with 90BB stack or against a tight player with 9BBs left.

    How to improve your preflop short stack game?

    Information you received so far is good, and you should know the theory, but if you want to improve, you should practice and do your own calculations for different scenarios.

    Here are the examples of calculations and how shoving ranges differ based on your opponents calling tendencies:

    It’s a super important piece of software, and if you are aiming to succeed at poker, you need to use it on a daily basis.

    Let’s say it’s final table time, and there are 7 players left. You are at the small blind with 10BBs, and there is a tight recreational player with 9BB left on the big blind.

    If opponent’s calling range looks like that:

    When villain in the big blind is calling so tight, you can easily jam any two cards profitably, and it’s not even close. Here you can see the results (number below the cards means how many big blinds you are making by shoving):

    Now you are in the same situation, just playing against a good regular player with looser calling range that looks like this:

    With villans calling range constructed like the one above, we should still be shoving wide, but still noticeably tighter. A lot of hands also become marginal, and we can find a better spot later on. Here is the shoving range (some hands are unprofitable to shove with now already):

    HoldemResource Calculator (HRC) shows us optimal, Nash ranges. You should take that into consideration and adjust players’ ranges based on how you perceive them. Even if villains calling range above is correct and optimal, how many times have you seen someone calling preflop all-in with J4s or T7s? That also speaks in favor of wide jamming from late positions while being short stacked.

    One thing to have in mind is that HRC doesn’t take card removal effect into account.Simply said, it means that if 5 players already folded to us, there is a slightly bigger chance that the player in the big blind has a hand. So you should probably fold or limp hands that have +0.20 or less, as they are too marginal to shove.

    We can deduct one more thing based on these calculations and common sense. Because players are usually calling too tight when you go all-in, you can limp your premium hands too. You avoid your opponents out-right fold, which is something you don’t want while holding aces, and you also give him a chance to raise. It’s another factor that speaks in favor of playing a mixed strategy. When you include good hands in your limping range, you are balanced and hard to play against. If you will only limp your bad hands, it becomes profitable for the villain to jam any two hands and print money.

    Numerous scenarios can occur. You can be in a spot where you need to decide between pushing, calling, folding, restealing, etc. HRC will help you calculate all of those, so it needs to be part of your itinerary.

    How to play short stack poker post flop:

    When we are playing short stack poker, most of the decisions will happen preflop. But there are still scenarios in which we’ll play post-flop.

    One of the crucial things is that the stack to pot ratio gets smaller when one of the players is short stacked. Because of that, we should adjust, play more aggressively on the flop, and stack off more lightly. If we don’t go broke on Q73 with Q9o in the early stages of the tournament while we are 100BBs deep, all the chips will inevitably go in the middle at the final table with a 13BB stack.

    Continuation betting (C-betting) is generally polarized when we play short stacked.

    It means you should c-bet a lot of the hands that missed flop and hands that smashed it. But you should also have some hands in checking back range that have relatively high equity, that you would typically continue with if stack were bigger. Thing is check-raising becomes more frequent with short stacks, and you don’t want to bet-fold weak draw if the opponent decides to raise you. It’s one of the biggest leaks players have as it wastes equity.

    Here’s the example on c-betting tendencies while playing short stack tournament poker:

    1. Let’s say both players in blinds are tight and passive, and you decide to raise K7o from BTN with the stack size of 17BB. Big blind decides to call.

    The flop is J96.

    As we said, c-betting is polarized, so betting in this spot is mandatory. You will scoop the pot immediately a lot of times, and if you get raised, it’s an easy fold. Villan probably has it, and you are, most of the time, folding a hand with three outs at most.

    But when we open hands like 97s or Q8s and J96 flop comes, mentioned hands should be in your checking back range, as we forced to fold a hand with decent equity and more than three outs if villain decides to raise, which is disastrous. When stacks are deep, you can bet your weak draws, as you can afford to call a raise and re-evaluate on the turn. If we improve on later streets, there are implied odds present, and we can get paid immensely. In case we miss, our call wasn’t all that expensive.

    Hands like KJ, QJ, JT, where we flop a top pair (on J96 flop), should always be a c-bet. When stacks are short, we need to protect our hands more.

    Stabbing

    Stabbing is just another term for »bet« in poker. It’s used when there was a lack of interest shown by other players, and we bet without a hand to collect the pot. When our opponent or we are short-stacked, we can use it in combination with the mixed strategy that was mentioned in the preflop section. It really is super profitable, and you should use it in high frequencies.

    Here’s the example for easier understanding:

    You are on the BTN with 17BB, and you get 98s. The hand is too good to fold, but there is a moderately aggressive small blind with 13BB and passive big blind with 18BB, so you decide to limp instead of raising to avoid a re-shove. Small blind completes, and the big blind decides to check. Flop is a monotone K32 and hand checks to you. It is very profitable to stab here even without a hand, as most of the time, other players missed too, so you can collect valuable chips without investing much.

    If the board comes 456 with flush draw possibilities, you should consider checking back your weak draw with two overcards to avoid getting check-raised and being forced to fold.

    Conclusion

    We discussed theory, basic strategies, and presented examples on how to play short stack poker that occurs basically every single time at the final tables. But it needs to be said that these are just essential fundamentals. The focus was mainly on giving you an idea of how to be in as many +EV spots as possible.
